Project Narrative

The Challenge

The Alto Tâmega and Barroso region is a vast, low density territory with diverse offerings spread across 2,922 square kilometers. The primary challenge was to create an integrated digital tool that could unify the unique identities of six different municipalities while promoting the region as a single, cohesive destination for nature, thermalism, and gastronomy.

The Solution

The app functions as a comprehensive travel companion designed to increase the visibility of the region's "hidden secrets" through several key pillars:

  • Integrated Regional Guide: Centralizes information on the overwhelming landscapes, unique historical heritage, and ethnographic traditions of all six municipalities in one place.

  • Multimedia Exploration: Features "The Region in 360º" and other interactive multimedia content, allowing users to virtually explore landmarks like the Roman bridge in Chaves or the mountains of Barroso before visiting.

  • Specialized Itineraries: Provides curated routes for thermal tourism, hunting wealth, and gastronomic discovery, helping visitors navigate the territory based on their specific interests.

  • Promotion & Gamification: The app is used as a strategic tool at major international fairs (like BTL and FITUR), often featuring interactive elements like a "Wheel of Fortune" to reward users who download the app with local vouchers and regional products.

Design Strategy

The interface emphasizes accessibility and high-quality visual storytelling. It utilizes a clean, image-driven layout to showcase the natural beauty and biodiversity of the region. The design is optimized for ease of use in rural areas, ensuring that the wealth of information—from PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) products to local monuments—is easy to find for a broad demographic of travelers.

Results

Since its launch, the digital platform has supported the regional goal of increasing visitor permanence and reducing seasonality. It has successfully asserted Alto Tâmega and Barroso as a sustainable and authentic tourist destination, particularly within the Spanish and domestic Portuguese markets. The app remains a central pillar of the region's "Tourism 4.0" strategy, focusing on smart and sustainable growth.
